Better Sex Talk

Did I get your attention? Of course I did. Well it's not what you think. Tricia and I were on the radio this past week on Chrystal Bougon's Better Sex Radio Show. We spoke about our new line of Diva Within Session. We are all about making real women feel beautiful about themselves because you are gorgeous. We had a great time on the show. For those of you who missed it, you can check out the segment at Better Sex Radio Show.

For those who missed our Pleasure Party from Bliss Connection, let us know if you want to come to the next one. We will probably have another party in August 2009 and if you want to be placed on the waiting list let us know.

We will also be doing Diva Parties soon which I am so excited. We have a few artistic makeup artists and hair stylist that we are lining up to work with. This going to be so much fun. Imagine getting dress up, pampering yourself, drinking some delicious wine and eating chocolate, and having some fun girl time. How does that not sound great? What we'll be doing is hosting parties at your home or in our studio and the host gets the free session and prizes depending on the sales for that evening. If you are interested in hosting one, let us know and we'll put you on the waiting list.

Haven't posted in forever!!!!!
Sorry everyone. I know we haven't been posting lately except for our promotions. It's not that we don't love you and want to stay in touch, we have just been busy creating a new website. We have been working hard in updating our website at www.westfallphoto.com. The site was great 7 years ago when I created it after I left my position as a web developer, but now it's just outdated and sad. So, we went out and got a new website that should be going live in 2 days. I'm really excited about the new site. It has new images, music, more information, and just a great update. It matches with all of our marketing material and is just pretty. You have to tell me what you think.

Many of you rave and tell us how much you love your portraits, but now we need to have you help tell the world, so we have some incentives for you. Wine Tasting Date - CANCELED

Hello everyone. Due to the low response of interest of attending the wine tasting, we decided to cancel the event. The new website will still be launch and we will still be giving away a wine gift basket, but we will post more about that later. Thank you everyone.

Is your child America’s Cutest Kid?

Westfall Photography is participating in the National Charity Model Search to select “America’s Cutest Kid” and to raise funds for charity.We’re looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Finalists will be determined by online votes. Anyone may vote. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. Grand prize national winner will be determined from the 50 city finalists. Winners selected by photography and modeling industry experts.

If your child is selected the national winner, you’ll receive many prizes, including a $5,000 US Savings Bond and a Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera.

A fun day out with my girls

I was looking at a CD of some images of my daughters when we had a day off. We went out the water park in San Jose and just let the girls run around. On a hot day, these park is perfect because of the water area. Only problem is that there is no playground at or near the park so the girls got bored fast. So we headed over to the city.

We decided to go fly some kites and headed to Ocean Beach in San Francisco. If you have never been to that area of San Francisco I would recommend it. It is a nice beach that is great for flying kites and if you are into wind surfing, there are plenty of surfers out there too. I also like that it's a place in San Francisco where there is plenty of free parking which is rare in San Francisco.

We'll be photographing the cutest baby from Feb 23 to Feb 28 at the studio only and reservation is required. No entry fee and no purchase necessary. This contest is open to babies age 6 months to 1 year. We will be following the Cutest Baby Contest with 3 more; Cutest Tot, Most memorable Milestones, and the Funniest Tween Attitude. So you have a 25% chance of getting that college saving bond if your child wins the Cutest Baby Contest.

After your mini-session, that is a 30 minute session, the studio will pick their favorite image and the final winner will be voted by 3 other photography studios. New Year Resolution Update

Amazingly enough I am still doing good on my New Year Resolution. I have been pretty good this year so far. I eat lots of veggie and fruits, lean meat, and still doing my morning jog. Although I will admit with our cloudy weather I have not been as good. When it's cold and wet outside, it is just a little too hard to get myself out of bed at 5am to go on the track. You know the feeling right? I hope I'm not the only lazy one who wants to snuggle down into my warm blankets in the morning.

So, here's the updates. Since Jan 1st I have lost an additional 10lbs. My goal was to get down to a size 8 by Valentine and I'm almost there, but not quite yet. My size 10 are much more comfortable around my waist, but to be a single digit sounds so nice. So since I started my diet in Oct I have lost roughly 40+ pounds. I follow a low carb, low fat, low calorie, low taste...ok, the taste isn't too bad. However the peanut butter that my kids eat smell so good that sometime I just want to kiss it off of them.

I'll post some new pix of me as soon as I get a chance to take some and download them so you can see the progress.

So here's a recipe below for you to try out. This is typical of what I eat for lunch and dinner with an apple for desert.

Taco Salad
1. Prepare the meat topping

Dice up 1 onion, 2 garlic cloves, 1c fresh cilantro, 1 green chile
Heat up 1/4 cup of chicken broth. Place onion, garlic, cilantro, and chile in the broth and simmer until it is soft.
Place 1.5 lb of ground beef into the mix. I use the leanest I can find which is 97/3% so I don't precook the beef and drain the fat.
Add 2 tsp oregano, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp paprika, 2 dried bay leaves, 1/2 tsp sea salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper.
Set aside the meat once it is done cooking.

2. Prepare the "rice"
I found that following a low carb diet, it made me crave carbs less. However I still love rice and the best substitute I could find for it was cabbage.

1/4 head of cabbage. Dice very finely.
Dice 1/2 onion and simmer in chicken broth. Once the onion is soft, place the cabbage in it. You can season it with oregano, paprika, cumin, etc...or use about 2 tsp of taco seasonings.

3. Assemble the salad

Chop up some lettuce, I prefer Romain. Chop up 1 tomato. Chop up 2 Tbs of purple onion
Place lettuce, tomato, purple onion, "rice", and meat and enjoy!
If I am going to spoil myself that day I will add some whole beans, avocado, and maybe a little bit of chedder cheese on top of it.

I hope this recipe inspires you to find more low fat, low carb alternative. I am not into the Atkins diet where you eat no carbs. This isn't Atkins because I eat lots of vegetables and fruit in my diet. Basically I avoid the whites, such as flour, sugar, rice, and other process food. I cook everything from stratch and avoid buying food that has ingredients that I cannot pronounce. It takes a little to get use to, but this works. If you want more recipes and ideas, feel free to comment and I will update with more ideas.

Toy Playdate on Feb 18

With two young children, we are always searching for new toys. As a mom, the toys that I look for is to be fun, yet educational. I feel that all my daughter wants is Princesses and Dora toys, and while I don't mind her having a few of those, I want her to get something out of the toys that will tailor to her learning. So I found a company whose whole focus is making learning fun. Discovery toys is all about educational toys and as a mom, that's important to me. So we invited Ellen Hovey of Discovery Toys to come over and show us some new toys and letting us play before we purchase.

Discovery Toys will be holding a playdate at our studio on Feb 18 from 10am to 12pm. Ellen will be showing us the new seasons' toys and letting us play with the toys before we buy. It's a great time to let your children try out some new toys and seeing how they react to it.

Come join us for the playdate. We will also have some juice, fruits, and goldfish for snacks. Please call and let us know if you are coming so that we can be sure that we can accommodate everyone.

Diva Within Special

So, all my life I thought I was not perfect and beautiful. I look at those supermodel magazine, and yes, as a photographer I know they are photoshop and airbrushed, but still. Here I am short and after two children, anything but thin. You can't help but long to be beautiful and gorgeous. Come share the joy and move in with Westfall Photography

We love our studio space. It's such a cool building to be in and so conveniently located. If I want Sushi, I just cross the street. If I'm in the mood for chicken I just walk down to Sonoma Chicken Coop in Downtown Campbell and if I want Mexican, then I just walk over to El Burros in The Pruneyard. Hmmm, I thought I was on a diet.

Anyway, we love our studio and we want to keep the space, but times are a little slower right now and I know that our clients love our portraits, but everyone is on a budget including us. Therefore we are subleasing out both the bottom office as well as the whole top story of our building where our studio was. We'll still be doing tons of portraits, but in the lobby area now instead of upstairs. So, if you know anyone who is looking for a space right now to sublease, please send them our way.

New Years Resolution

So, can you guess what my New Years Resolution is? Think about it long and hard. You didn't guess to lose weight did you? Yep, me as well as the other millions of people out there decided that I want to lose weight for New Years. Well lose more weight at least. So after my birthday when I couldn't fit into a size 18 pants, I decided I had to do something about this so call "pregnancy weight". I mean, Violet is 18 months now. How much longer could I use the pregnancy as an excuse for my craving of chocolate, salty nuts, and Starbucks? So I went on a mission to lose the "pregnancy weight". I cut out everything but lean proteins, vegetables, and some fruits. I woke up at 5am every morning if not earlier, and hit the track running. Well I'm happy to say, I lost 25 pounds and went back down to a size 10 pants. I finally was able to donate my maternity clothes to Hope. So my resolution for this year is to lose another 25 pounds before my brother's wedding in May. Do you think I can make it? I sure hope so. I'll keep you updated with new images in a few months. I no longer have a need to hide behind the camera anymore.So what are my New Years Resolution?
1. Lose 25 pounds by May 30 for my brother's wedding
2. Keep my house and life organize for more than 1 day
3. Figure out what really makes me happy
4. Learn and forgive past mistakes, and move on to newer and better things

Hong Kong

If you love to shop, dine, and are a size 4 or smaller, than Hong Kong would be a dream. The city is very crowded with locals dining in the many restaurants that line the streets and shopping in the many little boutiques. I stayed in the Mongkok district in Hong Kong. The city was lit up brightly at night with the many shops and restaurants that going outside you wouldn't even know that it was the evening. The food here was delicious and more the size that we are use to in America, especially in comparison to Vietnam. I would recommend coming to visit Hong Kong with an empty suitcase so that you can fill it with the many goodies you purchase. I didn't purchase anything here because my back was already breaking from the items I purchase in Vietnam.

Saigon, Vietnam

My parents left Vietnam in the 70s and although for many years they have told me about their homeland, this week was my first trip. Saigon is a bustling city that is filled with motorbikes speeding through the city from every angle. In a city with over 9 million people, 6 million of them have motorbikes.
The part that I had the hardest time getting use to was crossing the major streets of Saigon. There is no clear traffic rules other than the occasional green and red light, which is not always followed. If you want to get from one side of the street to the other, you are to walk into moving traffic at a slow pace and look on all four sides of you. You walk cautiously, while dodging and praying that you make it across the street in one piece. The rule here is that if you are hit by a motorbike then you are responsible and must pay for all related damage. Luckily for me, I had my sister Monica to be my body shelter as we cross the streets. Having lived here for a few months, she would shiver less then me as we cross the streets.

Smile, you're on camera

Congratulations to the Tsao family for winning a gift certificate to our studio from the Las Madres Winter Rendezvous event. We had a nice time meeting this cute little family. Their daughter was adorable and this is one of my favorite image from the session. Don't they just look so happy and cute. I was laughing while taking this portrait because laughter is so contagious. I found out later that mom was also tickling baby and that was why she was laughing so much. Go mom! Mom always know how to make their babies smile and laugh.

For those interested, our studio does do events as well as customized sessions. We also donate Gift Certificates to non-profits that meet our requirements.

Chubby cheeks always gets me

I met the mom, Kelly, years ago when she use to do Pamper Chef and I was so happy to hear from her years later. I remember bumping into her and she was expecting, but this session was the first time I met their little girl. She was so cute. I just fell in love with those chubby cheeks. Their son had also grown. I remember him being my daughter size now, and now he was taller and is no longer a baby but a young boy. I'm always amaze how children can just change so much before you know it.

Congratulations to Kelly on your two beautiful children. Thank you for letting me capture your memories, especially the ones of your children being who they are.

Holiday Boutique and PJ, Cookies and Santa

Have brunch with us while doing some holiday shopping. We will be showcasing a variety of jewelers, toys distributors, candles, chef cookware, gift baskets, and many others. Bright little flowers during Winter

My first impression of the two little girls that I photographed this weekend was what little sunshine they were. I couldn't help but giggle, jump, and yes, even run laps around the building with these two adorable, 18 months and 4 year old, as we had so much fun. It was a really fun session to work with the family. I was sad when the session ended and I had to give the two girls a big hug as they headed home. Thank you Tina for sharing your family with me.

Tina and her family were the winning bid for the Yew Chung school fund raiser. For those of you who are always looking for ways to help raise money for their children's' school, please give us a call if you need some auction donation or setting up a fund raiser. Me and my new hair cut

I was getting so tired of having long hair. I mean at night sometime, I thought I was getting strangled only to realize that I was strangling myself, with my hair. I was growing my hair out for Locks of Love and it grew almost down to my "buns". Although I was looking forward to being able to help out a child, I was looking more forward to getting my hair cut. So yesterday I had sometime between appointments and I decided that's it, today is the day. So I called up Rage Hair Salon and see if they had an appointment available. Sue at Rage was helpful and got me an appointment with Sara Bettencourt. I told Sara that I was at her mercy. Not sure what to expect, I was totally happy with my hair cut. It's kinda vain, but I loved it so much I decided to blog about it. So here's my new hair cut. I took these the next day and I had to style the hair myself. Sara made the cut easy to work with and I was actually able to make it cute without to much skills. Love it. I would recommend Sara anyday.

Innocent Eyes and Dangerous Claws

I love the photos from this session. Just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. We had the best time making these images. I had a wonderful makeup artist, J. Harmon. Highly recommend her. When I Grow Up....
2010 Calendar Model Contest

What does your child want to be when they grow up? A Scientist? A Chef? A Veterinarian? A Superhero? Your child can be anything they want when they grow up, and we want to share their dreams with the world. You come up with the concept and we will help you create it for our upcoming 2009 calendar contest. The contest is open to all models between the age of 1 day old to 10 years old. The sessions will take place from October 19th to October 31st and there is no entry fee. We will be photographing all the little models all week, and at the end of the contest, the images will be posted online for viewers to vote. The twelve entries with the most votes will be featured in the calendar with the winner of the contest on the cover. The calendars will be available at the studio studio and other local businesses. 10% of your sales will go to benefit Operation Smiles.

So how do you get started? Easy, just call for your appointment that will take place from October 19th to October 31st. Tell us what you want your child to be when they grow up. We’ll work with you to make the concept come to life and tell you what to bring. There is no fee for the session or to enter the contest. Portraits may be purchased from the session. The images will be posted online for viewers to vote in early November and the results will be given in mid-November with calendars available starting late November. Good luck.

Trujillo, Peru

Today we had a day off. We were able to take a tour of the city of Trujillo and see many of the ancient ruins.

We also went out to eat Peruvian food that not only had an ocean view, but a yummy menu. The restaurant is owned by my roommate's, Olga, newphew and is called El Kero. I had the Arroz Con Marisco and went back later that evening for the Cebiche. Both were a delight to eat. The portrait above with the pretty young lady (Ketty A.) with her little boy is one of the owners of the restaurant. If you are in Trujillo, Peru look up the restaurant. It is worth the drive, plus you get a beautiful ocean view. How can you beat that?

In the evening I went out for a quick walk around the plaza. The city is so active at night. There were many musician just playing along the benches that surrounds the plaza. Above is a sweet moment where two young lovers were enjoying the brisk evening when a group of young musicians walked over and started playing some sweet music for the couple.

I enjoy Trujillo. The downtown of the city has a charm to it. The buildings are older, but full of character. It will be on my list of city to come back to for a visit.

Quito, Ecuador

Day 1

We left Medellin, Columbia and flew into Quito Ecuador. Our agenda for tomorrow is completely full and we'll be meeting with many different sector of commercial businesses in Ecuador. This is the video of the hotel that we are staying in; Hotel Dann Carlton.

The delegation was so busy in meetings all day both days that we were in Quito that I did not get a chance to see the city. What I did see in Ecuador were amazing flowers. The flower industry in Ecuador is enormous. Olga, my roommate for the trip, and I went out for a walk our last day in Quito in the evening. It was our only and last chance to see the city. The whole town was asleep at 11pm in the evening except for this flower stand which still had the lights on. We went over to talk to some of the security guards and found out that the flower stand was still open. A young 13 year old boy by the name of Luis was managing the stand. He works the stand in the evening and does not go to school. I gave him my business card and I hope he learns to use the internet so that he may see the portrait that I took of him and Olga. Luis was an illustration of a need for education reform. I value education and it is sad to see a young mind with so much potential that won't be embrace an cultivated.

Medellin, Colombia

From the airplane I was amazed already at how beautiful this city is. It's so green and lush. Medellin was amazing to visit. The images that I am able to share with you does not show you the beauty of the city. Due to the limited time that we had in the city, most of the delegation time spent in the city was for business and we were limited in being able to visit the sights of Medellin. We did take a city tour to visit different section of the city, but I did not bring my camera with me to capture any of the sights that we saw.

I plan to come back to visit the country and especially this city. I would recommend going to the Museo de Antioquia which features the artist Fernando Botero. I would also recommend if you go to the local bar to order the Aguardiente, an anise-flavored alcohol drink that is 60% proof. My last recommendation would be to have the Ajiaco, a tipico Colombian soup.

We went to the Santo Domingo Savio to observe the neighborhood as well as see the development and initiative that has been taken to build a stronger community. The Santo Domingo Savio barrio was once considered perhaps the most violent neighborhood in all of Latin America during the 1980s due to the cocaine cartel boss Pablo Escobar. The neighborhood now has a 5 story library that more than 1,000 people use the free computers, children’s play area and adult education classes. The neighborhood has gone through much transition along with the rest of Colombia since President Alvaro Uribe took office in 2002.

Bogotá, Colombia Day 4

Today we actually had some downtown to relax and see the city of Bogotá. There are so many different section of the city from the historical plaza where the Casa de Narina is to the financial district to the downtown section. The people in Bogota seem very friendly and there are many street vendors offering chips, dried plantain, and other treats throughout the city. The historical section was my favorite district of the city. It was filled with beautiful architectural that had fine detail and an array of texture and color.

I have not had a chance to visit the actual city nor take any photographs of the city. So instead I posted up a few videos that I captured on my cell phone. Just giving you a little overview of what has been going on. The first video is a room tour of my room at the Windsor House Hotel where I am staying.Sorry about the scary, horror movie breathing. My allergies have been horrific. The second video is just a view of the city of the AmCham building. The last video is a little clip of the reception that the Greater San Jose Hispanic Chamber hosted at the Ambassador resident.

The meetings have been well. The Colombians are very friendly and very open to doing businesses with the US. I met with many textile owner and jewelry seller that I am considering using to put together Creative Buzz Kits. I am really excited about these kits and will be hosting a focus group in October to get feedback on what people want to see. I also want to use the textile and stone here in Columbia to create more product lines that incorporates your beautiful portraits into more than just a wall portrait, but a part of your life that you carry with you everyday.

Hopefully we´ll actually see Bogotá tomorrow or Saturday. I will update you if we do.

Hotel Hyatt hosting The Americas Competitiveness Forum

The Hotel Hyatt has some interesting structural design that I finally went to see today in the evening. The forum has been continuous the whole time so I haven't had a chance to visit Atlanta at all other then the hotel and a mile radius when we walked to Walgreens to pick up some personal items. So rather than photographing Atlanta the city, I photograph inside the hotel we are staying at. The city is very beautiful in the parts that I have seen and I look forward to visiting again in November if I make it out the the business forum that PPA is holding.

The Americas Competitiveness Forum

The second day of the forum. Today the panels that I sat in spoke mainly about how education and entrepreneurship are the main factors that are needed to be competitive. The basic purpose of this forum is to build the connections with representative in both North America as well as Central and South America so that we may work together as a Western Hemisphere to build economic growth as well as be competitive in the market. The Americas Competitiveness Forum

Many of you know that I will be away from the studio for the next three weeks. I am joining the Greater San Jose Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GSJHCC) to the Americas Competitiveness Forum and then to Columbia, Ecuador, and Peru. We left to go to the airport late Saturday evening and caught a redeye. We arrive to Georgia at 5am in the morning and the day started. We had breakfast and went straight to Durid Hill High School to meet President Uribe Velez of Columbia. Below is the video of Carlos F, the CEO of GSJHCC, addressing President Uribe on the mission of the our delegation to Latin America.

A Child's Play

I just had to post this video because I love the innocence of the it. This is a video of my daughter who just turned 3 years old playing with a balloon. We were walking downtown and I had to pull out my little camcorder on my phone to record this moment. There is such a innocence and delight that only a child has portrayed here. Sometime us adults have to reflect on this and remember what life is about; enjoying the little things in life.

Well if you post a video for one daughter, you need to post one for the other. Here is my youngest, 15 months. It's a short clip that I took while we were at the bank waiting for paperwork. She loves to wear my sunglasses and I think it's so adorable on her.

Jasper - 6 months

Baby Rhys

Yes, that is how you spell Rhys (pronounce the same as Reese). I learn that Rhys is the way the original and authentic name is spelled. It's the perfect name for this little boy who was so patient and sweet. I love holding newborns and didn't want to put this little fella down, but I had to work. It's a tough job working with little newborns all day. I mean, I have to get on the floor and coo and play with them. Sometime I have the hard assignment of holding them and watching them look at me all cross-eyed. :) Fine, you got me. I have a great job and love it.

So little Rhys was a very cute little one. He had perfect little toes and perfect little fingers to match. He was awake for most of the session, but barely made a peep until the every end when I think we had tired the poor little fella (and dad too) out. I want to thank you Shannon and Jena for letting me share this sweet moment with them. It's always an honor when parents let me share that first few days of their babies life.

1st Birthday

It's been busy at the studio with the move from our residential studio to our new studio in Campbell along with all the other sessions and business related events that I have been really slow at blogging. I know I'm behind, but I'm finally on Yelp. If you have worked with us and love what we do, please review us on yelp. "Yelp", I like saying that word. I like saying "yelper" even more. What a fun site that gets really addictive to look on. I was looking the other day for a good Pho restaurant and the next thing you know 3 hours have passed, I was still hungry, and reading people's comments instead of eating dinner. Hmm, maybe this could be my new diet. :)

Just to let you all know, Yelp decided to get rid of any user who owns a business. I had many clients who were also business owners and happy clients of Westfall Photography review me on Yelp and they all got kicked off. They also got rid of other users that I can't determine why. Congratulations to Jason and Krystal on their little bun in the oven. I had a great time with this couple during their session. Jason and Krystal are expecting a little baby boy in just a few weeks and I can't wait to meet their little bundle of joy. They were such a fun family filled with tons of joy, anticipation, and excitement as we talked about their expectation. I sure you can tell from the portraits that we capture that these two are going to be great parents. They even painted their little baby boy room with polka dot. That's brave! Little Will

Happy birthday to little Will. He turned 1 year old a few weeks ago and we were happy to be part of his first year. We went outside and photographed this little guy playing with bubbles along with traditional studio portrait. Will seemed to have a fun time playing, but I had to calmly take some portraits of him when he wasn't paying attention. I think I had too much energy for him. Usually it's the opposite and I'm wipe tired from chasing the little ones all over the place and by the end of the session I feel like a sack of potato. We wish you many years of happiness, candle blowing, and laughter as you grow up.

Avery turns 1

Avery turned 1 a few weeks ago and I was going through her images and realize that I have to share these images with everyone. She is one of my favorite little girl to photograph. I have known her mom, Leslie, for many years back when I first started out in photography and share a studio in Sunnyvale. Leslie has been an amazing client who has always been supportive of my business growing. When Avery was born I was so honor to be able to come and photograph her because she was born premature so Leslie had to limit the number of visitors. Looking back at the newborn portraits of Avery and looking at her 1 year portraits I can't believe it is the same little girl.

Congratulations to Avery on turning 1 and thank you for inviting us to your party. Daniella and Violet had a wonderful time and I always enjoy seeing one of my favorite little client.

Courageous Kids

Every year the professional photography association that I belong to, Professional Photographer of Santa Clara Valley (PPSCV), volunteers on Mother's Day at Great America. We photograph the families that come out to the American Cancer Society's event, Courageous Kids. It's a wonderful day that allows the families to come out and enjoy Mother's Day. I, along with a group of professional photographers, take family portraits of all the families that participate in the event. There are always many happy children, hotdogs, balloon and lots of ice cream. Even though it's Mother's Day, I make sure that I come out and volunteer every year because I know that for that day I can give back some happiness to the families by giving the gift of a family portrait. I am thankful that the American Cancer Society has such a great event.

Meet BABI 2008

We were a vendor this year at Meet BABI. The event is a wonderful gathering of birth professionals such as doulas, chiropractors, baby boutiques, and of course photographers such as myself. This is an annual event and as members of Bay Area Birth Information (BABI) we try to be at the event every year. It's a great place to be if you are an expecting mother. We had a wonderful time at the event. I brought my two girls and they totally enjoy themselves as well. Sunnymont Nursery School had a nice set up with clay, toys, and little friends for my daughters to play with. This year I took my camera along and took a few images for BABI and had a great time doing so. We are planning to be at the Meet BABI Pennisula event on September 27th at Redwood City Downtown Library. If you know any expecting mom I would recommend the event to them.

We were honor to work with Thuy Vu from CBS 5 and Christina Andreson, mother of Zoey Eoff in this heartwarming piece. As the area coordinator for NILMDTS one of my main goal is to build community awareness of the organization so that families know that we offer this service as well as getting more volunteers to help out. For those of you that don't know my involvement with NILMDTS, the charitable organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) provides bereavement images of children for families across the United States. I’m so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization that helps grieving families through the agonizing pain of losing a child.

Bay Photographer Documents Terminally Ill Infants

It's one of the saddest things a parent could ever face-- the death of an infant. But a new Bay Area group is helping to ease the pain by providing a service the families can hang on to forever.

Christina Andresen and her boyfriend were thrilled when they found out they were having a baby girl. But five months into the pregnancy, Andreson learned the baby would likely die soon after birth. "We found out she has trisomy 13, which is a chromosomal defect," said Andreson.

So the family is clinging to hope, but also, confronting reality. "We've already talked with funeral homes and stuff like that," said Andreson.

Helping them through their emotional journey is Jessica Westfall, a professional photographer in San Jose. Her portraits have won awards, but the Andresen family has won her heart.

Westfall is part of a national organization that volunteers to take photos of families whose babies are terminally ill. The services are completely free, provided by photographers who know that through their camera, every image of every little foot, every little hand, is a lasting one.

"Your memory will fade over time," said Westfall. "I create these images because I know the family will have these to treasure."

Westfall is starting a Bay Area chapter of the group, called Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.

"It's hard," said Westfall. "Especially the first few sessions I had. I came home crying. It was heartbreaking."

Heartbreaking - yet heartwarming - to be there for the families. Shortly after Andreson gave birth to baby Zoe, Westfall was there, capturing memories.

Experts used to warn parents not to bond with babies who wouldn't survive for long-- the pain would be too hard.

But looking at the photos, Andreson believes they're a way to heal. "They just make it to where a horrible situation comes out beautiful," said Andreson. "It's more of some way to cherish her."

Avery turned 1

Little Avery, not quite walking yet, but still full of energy. We had a great time photographing this little angel. Her mom came in with the cutest little outfits, but then again Avery always has the cutest outfit. She is one of the best dressed little girl. We finished her Little Feet First Step session now that Avery is a big girl. Our First Step membership photographs our babies at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. After playing dress up we had a little snack. Her birthday cake session was as much as her doll-up session. Thanks for the fun.

Vivian

Vivian normally does the "fierce" looks in her modeling portfolio and requested that we capture images that showed the softer side of her. I think we definitely hit the nail with these images.I love how she just radiates and glow in these images. It makes me feel like I'm sunbathing at a warm beach and just relaxing in the sun. There is a glow to these images that just makes you feel warm.

Anna Ho
Kind, beautiful and smart (sorry guys, she's taken)

I worked with Anna this week and she just amazed me. She is such a lovely young lady who has not only modeling for Microsoft, Cisco, Google, just to name a few. She is also a recent graduate at Stanford University and studying for her JD/MBA. When she isn't modeling or studying, she gives back to the community and volunteers through Junior League. Oh of course to top it off she's gorgeous, tall, and thin. A rarity to find these day someone who is not only beautiful on the outside but on the inside as well and of course intellectual. I wish the best to Anna. She made my day working with her. It was great to be around so much positive energy.

Eve is a sweet, young, beautiful girl who has chosen to pursue her dream of modeling. She is currently signed with Halvorson Model Management. She made my job easy. NILMDTS on the Today Show

My involvement with NILMDTS for the past 2 years has been such a blessing. Each family that I serve holds a special place in my heart. The charitable organization Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS) provides bereavement images of children for families across the United States. I’m so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization that helps grieving families through the agonizing pain of losing a child.

1st Place Studio Portrait

We won!!!! For PPSCV Year End Print Competition we won 1st place Studio Portrait for our portrait "Mother's Comfort". We also won 2nd place Environmental this year for "Storytime".

I was so happy to hear them announce my name for the award. Sad part is I had my little daughter during the award ceremony and she had just gotten into some chocolate. I don't think I need to say much more, but as I was cleaning her up when they decided to announce me as the winner. A little surprise and messy, I stood up and accepted my award. I'm happy to let you know that when you work with us, we'll produce award winning portraits.

For the two families that I created these portraits for, thank you for letting me work with your beautiful family. I will be sending you both a gift to show you how thankful I am to have such great clients.

Westfall Photography Holiday Cards

Why is it that every year I am late at getting my cards out? This year I really planned ahead too. I had the layout for the cards, outfits, and props ready the first week of November. I took the images of the girls mid-November and I order my cards the first week of December. Unfortunetly my lab was really backed up and by the time they deliver my cards I was in Arizona. It doesn't matter though because I LOVE the cards.

I love how animated my little girl is. Daniella was wonderful at acting surprise that her little sister was her gift this year. We had a great time taking these images. We were in and out in about 15 minutes. My girls are great at taking pictures, but at the same time they have the expansion of a goldfish. I never shoot for longer than 15 minutes when it comes to my family. Beyond that and I have a mutiny on hand.

Happy Holiday

Like mother, like daughters

Debra came in to talk to me about Bay Area Mama and decided that it was time for her to come in herself to get a family portrait. I am so glad she did too, because I had a great time photographing her 3 lovely daughters. It was so much fun watching the family interact. It was fun seeing siblings laughing, pushing, and playing with one another. I guess that sisterly love (and bickering). The love that Debra had for her daughter also was clear as she joined in on the laughing, hugging, and smiling.

Fisher Holiday Portrait

I was so excited when Amy called me and told me that they wanted to do a family portrait. I haven't worked with the family since 2005 so I was anxious to see the kids again. Oh my goodness, I can't tell you how cute Amanda and Zack were. Zack was your typical 2 year old boy. Wanted to play with his truck the whole time, but we were running out of sun fast so he didn't get much truck playing time. Amanda, who is now 4, was so adorable. I wanted to take her home with me for the day so much. She was full of energy, very curious, and loved to talk. When she invited me to come with them to go see Santa after the session I would have joined them if I had my little girls with me. It's so much fun to see the kids grow and I can't wait for the next portrait session with the family.

Rebuilding Together - People helping people

Rebuilding Together is a wonderful organization that I am so happy to be a part of. I got involved a few years ago and want to continue to be involve in this organization. So this weekend I volunteer my service as a photographer. My job that day was to photograph different projects that were taking place in San Jose for their pr material, website, sponsorship, and anything else that is needed. I'm happy that my services were of use and I want to give a big thank you to everyone who came out this past weekend to help out the community.

Halloween Event

October is Family Portrait Month and so I decided to work with some moms and we put together a Halloween Portrait event. These moms donated $25 to PPA Charities which is giving the money to Operation Smiles. We have collected enough money to change one child's life. There are still 20+ more days in October and I am hoping by the end of the month we have collected enough money to change at least 5 children lives. This is the first year that I have done Family Portrait Month and it feels so good to know that we are giving back to the community. I hope to continue this tradition next year. Violet is 5 months

So my little baby is almost a whole half a year old. I'm so sadden by how fast time has gone by. I still remember clearly the first day I met her and how little she was. She's practically filling out her car seat now and is full of smiles. She is still a very quiet baby and doesn't laugh. Instead she just opens up her mouth and smiles but no sound comes out. Her hair is still wild and won't be tamed. The images I have posted here is what her hair looks like everyday. I did brush it, but I didn't comb and blow dried it like I did the last time I photographed her. Ok, looking at these images makes me realize how much I miss her. Enjoy, I'm going to go hug my cutie.

Jason, a natural ladies-man

Jason came in at 2 months with his mom, grandma, and "auntie". He was so sleepy when we first started and just had all the ladies coo-ing over him as he snuggled in and made himself comfortable. After a few minutes of snuggling we had to get to work and capture some great images of him. Although I couldn't seem to get him to smile I still feel that we got some beautiful image of Jason. He has great big eyes and I did catch a dimple when he smiled (of course, my camera was put down at the time). After the session I got a turn to hold him and I have to tell you, he had me melting. Such a doll!

Oh, and Jason's mom, Kimberly B, was recovering from a kidney stone removal. Can you believe how wonderful she looked? Her skin just glowed and for a new mom I have to say she has been one of the best-put together new moms that I have worked with. She looked fabulous, not tired at all. How did she do that?

Violet 4 months

My little Violet is growing up fast. She's 14lbs now and full of smiles. She's a very mellow baby and she is content just sitting there cooing with you for hours. I actually blew dry her hair for this photograph. Daniella who is still working on her hair freaked out when she saw me with the blow dryer and took off running to hide in a corner when she saw me turn it on. She's not to sure what to make of a dryer because I rarely use one on myself and other than the occasional quick blow on her back I have never used one on her. I love this photograph because it's exactly Violet. Just a sweet little smile.

Our Little Family

My friend and fellow photographer, Nancy Degenkolb, came out from Texas to visit and took our family portrait. It was madness trying to get my hyper 2 year old to sit still as well as my dog who wanted to go lay out on the grass. My littlest one was falling asleep as Warren and I tried our best to look good and comfortable. In the end we did get a nice portrait. I would have loved to have the girls smiling, but today wasn't going to be the day. Thank you Nancy for working with us. I'm still glad that we are able to capture this time in the girls life. Violet is now 4 months and this was the first time that we had one of our friends photograph our family since Violet was born. Baby changes so much so fast so I know that in another 2 months she would look so different if we waited. I love my family. They're such great fun.

No fair, I have to say Happy (the dog) looks the best. He didn't even brush his hair for this session.

Introducing Little Zackary

Little Zackary born just this past Saturday, September 8, is one healthy good looking boy. He's completely perfect and beautiful. I would like to congratulate the proud parents, Dan and Vicki Schrager on their new little bundle of joy. I went to visit Vicki today and took a few images of Zackary while he was sleeping. I was hoping to take a few more, but I had my little Violet and my big little person, Daniella with me. So as you can imagine, visiting time was limited. I can't wait to come up and visit with Zackary some more next time. Congrats!!

Gorgeous Rockstar

Madi is the sweetest little rocker I know. She came in with the idea in mind that she wanted to create some images that would work well for her CD that she's working on. We went through a few outfits, took an array of rocking images, and had a great time. Here are some of the images we got from the session. My only complaint was I didn't get a private encore from our singer. I can't wait until she gets her first signing contract.

Little Quarterback

Little Zackary isn't even born yet, but we all know that his future holds for him that he will be the next biggest Quarterback for the Raiders team.

Vicki Schrager is one of my best friend from my childhood and when I found out she was pregnant we both knew she was going to come in and take some great pregnancy photos. We photographed the little guy in his going home outfit, a Raiders' onesie of course. He even has a Raiders' blanket to go with it that was made by my mother-in-law. This little guy will be coming out with a ball in his arms. I wish the best for Vicki and Dan and I can not wait to meet the little fella. It's so exciting that she's having her baby boy only 4 months after I had Violet. It's wonderful that as close friends we are having children so close together and that they'll be able to grow up together.

New Concept. Yay or Nay?

So I saw this idea in a book and I heard a speaker talk about a similar idea and I decided to try it. The idea is to merge images together to create a final painted image. I went ahead and try out the idea on myself. Here is an image of me pregnant with Violet and Violet incorporated back into my tummy. I can't tell as a mother if this reminds you of pregnancy or if this is a creepy image. My husband hates it, but then he tells me, "well I'm not a woman, you should ask your female friends". So help me out here, do you like it or hate it?

Violet 2 months

I can't believe two months have passed already since we took little Violet home. She's not even tiny anymore. She's so chubby and I'm not sure how and when, but her head seems to have double in size. Her hair also won't lay flat. I'll take her out of the shower and as soon as it dries, up it goes again. Her hair just sticks up into a little Mohawk. On the other hand, Daniella's hair won't grow in at all. I can still see her scalp. Hair or no hair, I love my two girls.

UGMX Mixer

I met Kimberly Rucker at the July mixer. She's a beautiful tall model who arrived with her hairdresser, Andrew Harris. Together they were a great team. Andrew was wonderful to work with. He made sure that everything was perfect and not a single stray hair. It made me laugh watching the two of them work together. They seem so comfortable and if I could get an assistant as great as Andrew at every session as well as a model as easy to work with as Kimberly I would be set. I hope to work with them again.

Fun with Swords

So this is the same session where Daniella had a boo boo. I didn't take many images as you can imagine, but I wanted to share them with you anyway. The model was Mishelle Welsh. Daniella's Boo Boo

So I had decided to do a test shoot with some people I met through Model Mayhem and while we were setting up the lights Daniella was climbing in the under construction studio. Well unfortunately for my little one, she decided to climb in again and the porch lights weren't on. Daniella fell down and hit her brow bones. She was bleeding everywhere and screaming. I took her in and try to exam her but she wouldn't let us near her. She finally calmed down and since it was 10pm and Urgent Care was closed we let her sleep. The next day I took her to Urgent Care, who weren't happy that I didn't take her in the night before, and had them examine her. Daniella got 4 loose stitches in her head. I had to hold her down while they put her stitches in. She was crying "mommy! mommy! mommy!" the whole time. Afterward in a teary voice she said, "bye bye doctor". My poor little baby.

The Cost of Wedding Photography

This past weekend I went to my old childhood friend's, Minh Ho, wedding. Congratulation to the beautiful couple. Well this wedding reminded me why I am no longer a wedding photographer. When I first got into photography I photographed many weddings. As beautiful and fun as the day might be, when you are working 12 hours on some water and very little food it can be draining. Also, I would miss my two little babies so much if I had to give up my weekends again to work weddings. The photographer my friends hired was Scott Robert Lim. His work was wonderful and his price starts at $10k. Now, that may seem like a lot and I remember when I did weddings many people thought that I must make tons of money. Well I'm going to break down to you why spending $10k doesn't mean that the photographer keeps $10k in his or her pocket.

Starting cost	$10,000
- Cost of Goods (previews,production materials, prints, albums, frames, etc...)	- $2,000	$8,000
- Fixed Expenses(lease, licensing, business insurance, health insurance, workers comp, education, marketing, office supplies, samples, etc... )	- $3,000(assuming each event is 4% of yearly income	$5,000
- Taxes (Federal, State, Sales)	- $1,500	$2,500
Wages		$60/hour

Now remember the photographer has spent an average of 12 hours photographing both the engagement session and wedding event. They have also spent an average of 30 hours in consultation, editing, post-production, viewing appointments, and other production time. After all these hours they produce for you an album that will last a lifetime. After the music has died, the food eaten, the flowers wilted, and the guest leaves all you have left from the wedding are your rings and photos. Although it may seem like a lot, the cost for a good wedding photographer is well worth it.

Angel Jacob

Beautiful baby Jacob was born at 23 weeks gestation. I am honor to have been able to meet him and be with him during his brief time on Earth. The family truly touched my heart and I will pray for them. I am thankful to be part of 'Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep (NILMDTS)' and that we are able to provide our services to the families.

I joined and volunteer to be the area coordinator for the San Jose region of NILMDTS after having my first daughter Daniella. My daughter has been such a gift in my life and I am so blessed to have her. Family is the most important thing in my life and as a parent I realized how much these little people tug at your heart. As a photographer I have been given a gift that allows me to capture moments in life that may be lost as a faded memory otherwise. I am honor that the families that I have work with have allowed me to capture the memories of their children so that they may look back at the images and remember how beautiful their child was. Even though their time on Earth may have been brief, they largely impact many people including myself. I pray for all the families and thank you again for letting me part of your families' memories.

Maternity Never Looked So Good

I know, if you are like me, you just hate her don't you? How can someone make pregnancy look so good?!? Karen D'Aurora from the moment she walked into the studio just had a wonderful pregnancy glow to her. Oh, and this isn't her first pregnancy. While we were taking this beautiful image of her, her two year old was screaming and playing in the background, yet she is able to maintain a calm, peaceful smile on her face. She's so photogenic and an amazing mom! She is also a super sweet person with a smile constantly on her face. I have no idea how she does that. I mean, doesn't it hurt to smile that much.

My two little girls

Violet is three weeks and Daniella is almost 22 months. After being home and telling myself I was going to take the girls out, I finally went out to McClellan Ranch to photograph the two girls together. It's a cute little park to go to. There is a long trail that ends at a little creek. There is also a barn on the ranch, although I have never seen any animals in it.

So we walk up and now the trail so Daniella could go exploring. I finally put Violet down to take some images and Daniella ran up and started kissing her again. Daniella loves her little sister. Although I think that she still thinks that Violet is just a little toy because she wanted to carry her around when I put her in the basket. Violet slept the whole time we were out there.

Introducing Violet Thuy Westfall

Warren and I are happy to announce that Violet Thuy Westfall has arrived in our family. She was born May 12 at 6lb 5 oz.

Daniella loves her sister. She adore her from the first minute that she met her. I love watching her be a big sister. She gives her baby sister many kisses and hugs.

I finally went out at 2 weeks to the studio and took some images of Violet. She is two weeks in this image. She is such a calm baby and was so easy to photograph because she just happily lay there and coo. I love babies' coo-ing.

March of Dimes' WalkAmerica 2007

I'm not sure what was I thinking when I told Tina that I could volunteer to photograph at this years event. Being 37 weeks pregnant and having to pose groups of a 100 was definitely a challenged.

Here was one of the biggest group at the event.

They were the Savemart/Albertson group

The event overall was a success. There were so many walkers out that morning. It was great to see so many people supporting the Walk America event this year. Daniella and Warren also joined me to help me out. Daniella had a ball there listening to the music and watching the crowd. She even manage to find a 4 legged buddy.

So from 7:00am-9:00am we were out photographing the teams for March of Dimes. Daniella would have loved if we stayed longer to listen to the music and play at Vasona Park. Unfortunately we had to leave. I had to pack up and run down to Campbell Community Center because I was one of the vendors at Meet BABI. That was another fun event for the days. So many beautiful preggo and cute babies.

UGMX Model Mixer

Margarita and I went down to UGMX last night and met some new faces as well as had the chance to photograph some of the models. These girls were all so nice, fun, and easy to work with. For those of you who don't know UGMX is a music production company. They were started last June. They have really been out there networking and growing so it'll be exciting to watch where they will go in the next year. We also had MILO agency there last night and some of the models from the agency was there. Everyone I have met through both companies have been super enthusiastic, passionate, and fun to work with.

Little Avery Rogers

Welcome to the world! Little Avery was born premature and I was excited to meet her. She was sooo cute. I love newborns. They're so small and sweet, plus they make such cute little "mouse" sounds. Leslie, Avery's mom, looked great and was so natural at caring for this little angel. I just wanted to share a few of my favorite images from the session.

Seeing this little human makes me even more excited about my little one coming in a few weeks. Time goes by so fast and I can not believe that in a few weeks I'll have a little angel of my own.

Anxiety and Expectation

I have been photographing professionally for over 7 years and to this day I still feel my heart rapidly thumping right before a session. You would think after so many years that I wouldn't be so anxious right before a session. I want to be sure that my clients love their images and the fear that they may be unhappy hangs above me. Then when I start looking through my images and the samples I have display I realize that I'm a great photographer and that I have created many gorgeous images for many happy families. Once my clients arrive and I start the session, I then calm down and by the time we finish the session I loving the images that we created together and I forgot why I was anxious to begin with.

What I have has been called, Photographer Anxiety Syndrome (PAS). Many new photographers who have come to me as a mentor often tell me that they also have PAS. They are scare to get out there and photograph, let alone charge for their service, because of the fear of rejection. Here are some tips on how to get over PAS.

Tips on how to deal with PAS
1. Anxiety is good: I know this sounds like crazy talk but it's true. It means that we care about our work and our clients. This is a service business and we want to make sure our clients are completely happy with the work. After all these images will be in their family for a long time, it's natural for us to care that they get the most from the session. A photographer that isn't anxious may not care for their clients.
2. Practice your craft: You hear it all the time, practice makes perfect. Keep working on your craft and over time you'll be more comfortable. There are so many ways to light a person and it's so different photographing in a studio, with natural light, on-location strobes, reflectors, etc.. It's easy to see why it's so confusing and stressful, but keep practicing and you'll learn what you like depending on your situation.
3. Build your confidence: Go out there and get experience. With experience and skill comes confidence. As your confidence builds the anxiety will decrease.
4. Find a mentor: There are many professional associations out there with successful photographers. Join one and meet other professionals who can guide you and teach you what it takes to be successful. Many of the association have print competition. Enter the competition and have your prints evaluated so that you may continue to learn.
5.You get what you paid for: With digital photography age, there are so many new amateur photographer who really don't know what they are doing and will give away a CD full of images for pennies. Many of these "photographers" have no schooling, training, experience, or knowledge. All they have is an expensive SLR and out of 1000s of images they are bound to have a handful of good ones. It may seem hard to compete with that, but remember that it takes years to perfect a craft and what you provide your clients is a complete image that they will be proud to display on their wall, not just a snapshot.

Remember that anxiety is a natural feeling and isn't always bad. It's good to be enthusiastic and so passionate about what we do. Professional photography is one of the best field to be in and even if I have to deal with a little anxiety, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It is what keeps me excited and on the edge.

Westfall Photography receives a Merit

"Story Time"

We got another merit print award from PPSCV last night. The image of the Engebretson's daughters, "Story Time" receive merit credit. The judges really enjoy the lighting of the girls' face and the emotions behind big sister reading to little sister. We also enter the image "Golden Family" and the judge loved that the dog also was looking out into the bay with the family.

For "Story Time" we took the images in the families home. The mom, Erika, fell in love with this tender image because it showed the loving relationship between her daughter. I hope that Daniella will love her sister this much when she arrives in May.

I love working with the families and producing beautiful images for them. It's one of my goals that at every session that we create for our clients that we make at least one image to enter into print competition. As a photographer, entering the competition not only allows us to bring home some awards, but it allows us to grow as we constantly learn and try to improve ourselves.

Hi World!!

Hi, my name is Jessica Westfall and I am the owner of Westfall Photography. I am a portrait photographer based in San Jose, California. I have a wonderful career of working with amazing clients from the next rising star to a newborn.
